In the dairies or the agricultural sector, we do more recycled asphalt. It works as a base material. It is basically cold asphalt and as such it is a cheaper alternative to hot mix. It is faster and easier and there is no down time. Farmers don’t have to stay off of it. They don’t have to stay out of the way. We work around the farms. The milk trucks and farm tractors can keep coming in and out. There is no need to shut down their operations.

We use cold asphalt as base or gravel.

We don’t recycle asphalt ourselves, but we use it. When a  highway or parking lot is redone and all the asphalt is torn out, it is taken back to the plant. At the plant they run it through a crusher. Once it comes out of the crusher it is considered base just like gravel.

When we put recycled asphalt down there is no warranty. We simply put in base material which is no different than putting in gravel. With hot asphalt there is a warranty, but cold asphalt is just like gravel. The only difference is that it still has tar from when it was previously blacktopped. We spread it out, roll it, and over time it packs in and stays harder.

We buy and use recycled asphalt.

The dust after applying recycled asphalt is minimal compared to the use of regular gravel. We don’t recycle asphalt ourselves, but we buy it and use it. We also don’t reheat old asphalt to make new blacktop. Some of the plants we buy from reheat old asphalt but that is resold as regular hot mix. When you go to a plant and ask for recycled asphalt you will get the crushed up blacktop which is used for base.
